What gear should I buy? Buyers Guide 2019

For the beginner: Improve your podcast audio with minimal headache

Important Features

Yeti USB Microphone. With it’s own stand, USB connectivity and a port for your headphones it is well worth the $100 price tag. This is an all in one solution that will improve your sound without a ton of accessories.

Foam Windscreen. Never podcast without protection. This windscreen is not really for wind outside but the wind that comes out of your mouth when you make a P, B or T sound. Ward off bad mic pops with this inexpensive solution.

Headphones. You may not love the sound of your own voice, but if you’re not monitoring it, neither will your podcast listeners. Too close too the mic? Too far away? It’s impossible to tell if you aren’t monitoring yourself with headphones.

For the intermediate podcaster: take your podcast up a notch.

Important Features

Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. This audio device will turn your new analog microphone into a digital signal for your audio recording software. The second XLR port can be used for a second microphone or a device to record sound effects.

Rode Podmic. At $100 this extremely affordable but feature packed dynamic microphone will help block out surrounding noise (within reason) and put the focus on your voice.

Triton Fethead Inline Preamp. This tiny device will provide necessary extra volume for your new PodMic without extra noise.

For the Podcasting Pro: Sound like your favorite sports radio/NPR host

Important Features

Rodecaster Pro. From the makers of the PodMic is this audio device made specifically for podcasters. It features multiple analog mic inputs, mute/solo buttons, assignable sound pads for sound effects and a dedicated channel for telephone calls.

Electrovoice RE20. The choice of radio professionals across the world, the RE20 is known for its flat signal. That may sound negative but this lack of character gives it an even tone and limitless possibilities in post. Your voice will sound natural and smooth out of the box or however you want it to sound after post processing.

Focusrite ISA One Preamp. This is world class preamplification at home studio prices. Add gain to your microphone without the noise and it’s portable enough to take with you for an on-location interview.

These are just a few of the options out there in the great world of gear but I can personally vouch for all of this equipment. A WARNING: Don’t get so focused on new gear that you forget to turn on your microphone and actually podcast. The gear doesn’t make the pod, but it can help you achieve the sound you want.
